Flashcards are a kind of page (Working with Pages) for a talk, a toast or a pitch: a stack of small landscape cards, each holding a title and a few lines of text. The canvas shows one card at a time, with the cards still to come stacked behind it, and going to another card flips it over like a card in your hand.
Making Flashcards
- On a new tab: when the first page asks What Is This Page For?, choose Flashcards. The page becomes the first card, with the caret in its title.
- From the Start screen: Blank Flashcards starts an empty stack. Conference Talk, Wedding Toast and Product Pitch start a stack already written, for you to write over. Find them under Flashcards on the Start screen, under Presentations in Templates, or by searching (Templates).
- Another card: the + beside the card in front (its tooltip reads Add Another Card) adds a card after the last one and flips to it. There is no limit on cards other than a tab's page limit.
What a Card Holds
A card is text only: a title and rich text from the page toolbar, with headings, bold, italic, underline, colour, links, lists and alignment. Type / for a heading, a list, a quote, code or a divider.
- The Toolbar strip shows the page toolbar and nothing else: no palette categories, no tiles and no Search.
- Nothing can be put on a card: a shape, a picture or a chart drawn, dropped or pasted onto it is not added, and the editor says Flashcards hold text only. Pasted text keeps its headings, lists and formatting.
- The page toolbar on a card has no Insert, Comment or Assign Action. More Formatting ends with Card style.
Too Long for a Card
Each card stands on its own: its writing never flows onto the next card. When there is more than fits, the writing past the card's foot is kept but hidden, and the card shows Too long for this card.
- Press Split Onto a New Card on that marker, or in the card's settings (its cog), to move the writing that does not fit onto a new card right after it. A " (continued)" title goes with it.
- When one paragraph fills the whole card, there is nothing to split off: shorten it first. A tab at its page limit cannot take another card either; the button's tooltip says which.
Going Between Cards
Every way of going to a page goes to a card by flipping it: the Previous page and Next page arrows under the card, the arrow keys, a row in Contents, and a swipe or a drag let go toward the next card. Going forward, the card in front turns over its top edge and uncovers the next one; going back, the earlier card comes back over the top. With Reduce Motion on (in your settings, or your device's), the card changes at once with no flip.
Contents lists every card in order with its picture and name, and each row says how long the card takes to say. Drag a row to move a card in the stack.
The Card Number and Speaking Time
Each card's bottom-right corner reads its place in the stack, such as Card 3 of 10, and, once it has words on it, how long it takes to say at a steady speaking pace of 130 words a minute: 25 sec under a minute, 2 min from a minute up. Both are a guide on the canvas only, and exports leave them out.
Who Can Do What
An Editor writes on the cards, and adds, splits, moves and deletes them. A Participant writes on the cards already there but cannot add, split, move or delete one. A Viewer reads and flips through the stack and changes nothing. Everyone can flip (Sharing).
